Choosing a Nursing Home

Choosing the right nursing home for your loved one is an important and often stressful decision. Selecting a facility that you can trust to provide your relative with the kind of care he or she needs and deserves can be difficult. At Horn Law, P.C., we recognize the magnitude of this decision and would like to help you make the right choice. The following are some tips to help you make a decision with which you may feel more comfortable.

Factors to help you choose a nursing home that is best for your relative:

  • Go online. We recommend: Medicare.gov: Nursing Home Compare and Gilbert Guide
  • Speak to friends and ask around about your nursing home choices
  • Visit as many facilities as possible, more than once, and at different times of the day
  • Compare information about various nursing homes, such as results from health inspections, staffing, fire safety inspections and quality measures

These are just some suggestions. You should try to look into each nursing home as much as possible.

How to try to avoid abuse of a loved one in a nursing home

  • Try to visit as often as possible and vary the days and hours of each visit (this will prevent the staff from seeing a pattern).
  • If a problem does arise, write down the names of the individuals involved (always out of sight). This is important, because if you decide to bring a lawsuit or file a complaint with a state agency, you will have the name(s) of the individual(s) involved.
  • If you do suspect that your loved one has been abused contact an attorney who specializes in nursing home abuse cases as quickly as possible.

Always remember that the main objective is to get the best of care for your relative. If there is a problem, try to remedy it as quickly as possible — a lawsuit is not what you want when you put a loved one in a nursing home — this must be your last option.
